Three Hyundai models named 2012 "Best Bets" from the Car Book

Hyundai continues to collect awards for its model lineup adding The Car Book’s 2012 “BEST BETS” to the list. Three Hyundai models, Accent, Sonata and Tucson, earned the distinction of “BEST BETS” from author Jack Gillis and the Center for Auto Safety, the nation’s leading auto safety advocacy group.

32762_1_1
“We appreciate the fact that Hyundai has made a significant contribution to improving the market choices for the American car buyer,” said Jack Gillis, author, The Car Book. “During these most challenging times for the auto industry, the fact that Hyundai vehicles have the quality and features most important to today’s car buyer is a testament to their desire to meet customer needs.”

For 32 years, The Car Book has been the consumer’s best guide to smart and sensible car buying. The Car Book analyzes new vehicles each year to identify those making a significant contribution to improving the market. Vehicles are rated in nine key Car Book categories: crash tests, safety features, rollover, preventative maintenance, repair costs, warranty, fuel economy, complaints and insurance, with the heaviest emphasis on safety.

“Having three Hyundai models named as ‘Best Bets’ by The Car Book highlights our continued effort to deliver quality vehicles across the entire Hyundai lineup,” said Scott Margason, director, Product Planning, Hyundai Motor America. “The Accent, Sonata and Tucson all deliver advanced technology, design and fuel economy while continuing to exceed customer expectations in value, performance and safety.”

Hyundai’s all-new 2012 Accent redefines expectations in the subcompact category by offering the company’s distinctive and upscale “Fluidic Sculpture” design, best-in-class standard fuel economy, exceptional roominess and a full complement of standard safety features. Despite surprising technology and a significant increase in safety features, Accent’s pricing remains the same as that of the prior generation.

The award-winning Hyundai Sonata continues to be a huge hit thanks to Fluidic Sculpture design, impressive fuel efficiency, advanced technology and overall value. The 2012 model includes Blue Link, HD Radio Technology and a new seven-inch touch-screen navigation.

The 2012 Tucson is one of the smartest compact crossover choices available, delivering better fuel economy and range for consumers needing the utility of a CUV without sacrificing fuel efficiency. The Tucson improved fuel efficiency of up to an estimated 32 miles per gallon on the highway can be attributed to a new Active ECO System, low rolling resistance silica tires, high efficiency air conditioning and a larger capacity fuel tank.

Hyundai Genesis Named Most Dependable Midsize Premium Car by J.D. Power and Associates!

COSTA MESA, Calif., Feb. 15, 2012 – The Hyundai Genesis sedan is the highest-ranked model in the midsize premium car category in the 2012 J.D. Power and Associates Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS). Released today, the study also shows that Hyundai finished ninth overall, demonstrating that the company’s commitment to quality translates into long-term dependability for owners.

Jd

The Genesis sedan launched in the 2009 model year and earned Hyundai’s first-ever North American Car of the Year honor. J.D. Power and Associates surveys original owners three years after their vehicle purchase, so 2012 was the first year Genesis was included in the VDS, and it was the only category award recipient in its first year of eligibility.

“Our goal is to design and build cars that meet and exceed consumers’ expectations not only off the showroom floor, but through the duration of their ownership experience. Earning Hyundai’s first-ever top 10 finish in the J.D. Power and Associates Vehicle Dependability Study demonstrates that our efforts are paying dividends,” said Erwin Raphael, director of engineering and quality, Hyundai Motor America. “It’s equally gratifying to see Genesis sedan, a content-rich model with all the features you expect of a premium car, outperform powerful competitors in its category. Long-term dependability translates to a positive ownership experience and brings customers back to the Hyundai brand in the future.”

Genesis sedan tallied more than 20 top honors from the most prominent media outlets and automotive organizations in North America upon its launch as a 2009 model year. The trophy case includes awards from J.D. Power and Associates, Motor Trend, AutoPacific, Cars.com and leading consumer publications in addition to its North American Car of the Year honor.

Genesis is built on Hyundai’s performance-driven rear-wheel-drive architecture. Updated for 2012, the current model offers three powertrains: the Lambda 3.8-liter direct injection V6 engine producing 333 horsepower; Hyundai’s Tau 4.6-liter V8 engine producing 385 horsepower; and the new Tau 5.0-liter direct injection V8 engine producing 429 horsepower, available on the Genesis 5.0 and Genesis R-Spec models. With technology rivaling more expensive luxury sedans, convenience features like push-button start and navigation system, and five-star safety ratings from the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA), it’s clear that Genesis is among the best cars in the premium category. But at a starting MSRP of just $34,200, it’s no surprise the competition was left in Hyundai’s rear-view mirror.

The J.D. Power and Associates Vehicle Dependability Study measures problems experienced during the past 12 months by original owners of three-year-old (2009 model year) vehicles includes 202 different problem symptoms across all areas of the vehicle. Overall dependability is determined by the level of problems experienced per 100 vehicles (PP100), with a lower score reflecting higher quality.

Hyundai has shown consistent improvement in VDS, reducing problems per 100 vehicles by 75 points over the past five years.

Test Drive: The 2012 Hyundai Veloster Captures Young Drivers With A Sporty Look

Velosterlead

It took courage for Hyundai to build the Veloster. The little hatchback is aimed at young drivers, and history has proven that their fickle tastes can kill even the most valiant effort.

Take the Toyota Echo, for example, precursor to the current Yaris. The Echo was a replacement for the long-running Tercel, and it was intended to be cool enough to attract teens and 20-somethings. But when the car launched in 2000, middle-aged people snapped it up. They appreciated its frugality as much as its high seating position and tall roof, which made it easy to get in and out of.

Several years later, Toyota launched Scion, an entire brand focusing on being young and hip. But the Echo effect happened all over again with two of its three models: the xB crossover and, to a lesser extent, the smaller xA hatchback.

Hyundai, on the other hand, has so far appealed to young drivers purely by offering more for less, loading its cars with amenities and generous warranties at prices that undercut the competition.

The Korean company continues to do that, but now it is focused on boosting its brand image, as well. It wants to be “in” with the cool kids.

That’s where the Veloster comes in. You can tell it was styled to make an impression, whether you like its looks or not.

A couple of groups of young adults at a trendy event Hyundai hosted in Manhattan weren’t super impressed with the tricked-out Velosters on display. But in talking with them, I could tell they weren’t turned off by them, either.

The cars had flashy paint jobs, huge rims, and massive flat-screen TVs in their trunks. The event was one of Hyundai’s so-called Re:Mix Labs, which promotes a music project and documentary film.

The effort proves Hyundai hopes to catch the attention of hipsters. But the company is going about things in an interesting way—without being too heavy handed. For example, the documentary, titled Re:Generation, follows five DJs who collaborate with influential artists from other genres to create newly imagined musical mash-ups. The Veloster doesn’t appear anywhere in the film, but production staff used the hatchbacks behind the scenes to cart equipment and run errands. Find out more about the Re:Generation project here.

Several young ladies at the Re:Mix Lab in New York said they’d have no qualms driving the Veloster. And none of the half-dozen young partygoers thought driving a Hyundai would be a hit to their image.

That alone proves Hyundai has already distanced itself from its previous reputation of being a brand that puts out cheap, undesirable cars.

Hyundai put one door on the driver’s side of the Veloster because consumers in focus groups said they liked walking up to sporty coupe more than a frumpy four-door. But it added a rear door on the occupant side to address concerns that came up over getting in and out of the rear seat.

The asymmetry seems strange, but hipsters at the Re:Mix Lab immediately got the concept and liked it. In practice, the passenger-side rear door works well, too—or at least better than something like the rear-hinged half door on the passenger side of a Mini Clubman.

On a test drive up the Hudson River from Hoboken, N.J., the Veloster reaffirmed several things we’ve come to expect from Hyundais of late: the interior layout, fit, and finish are impeccable. Controls are finely crafted and well placed. And there is a sense of quality about the cabin.

Front seats were comfortable enough, and there was decent legroom in the back. Rear headroom was tight, though, with my head barely clearing the glass of the rear hatchback.

One downside is that the interior feels claustrophobic because of the small windows. You can hardly see out the rear side windows when sitting in the back. The cargo hold is decent—not cavernous, but it will hold a few duffles and a large laundry bag, at least.

In terms of driving dynamics, the Veloster was just O.K. Fuel economy is good, but the engine is underpowered and not quite as refined as a four-cylinder from Honda or Toyota. Steering is sharp and made the car feel sporty and nimble. The suspension felt stiff. It could use some fine-tuning to make it more compliant.

The interior didn’t seem to get too noisy when driving on the highway, but it wasn’t as quiet as, say, a Chevrolet Cruze. This is to be expected, because having the cargo area connected to the passenger compartment, as happens with hatchbacks, lets in more road noise.

We drove a couple of different models, including one with the optional dual-clutch transmission and a tech package and style package, which added things like 18-inch wheels, a sunroof, and navigation system. All of those options bring the suggested retail price to $23,325. That’s only $380 less than a Honda Civic Si Coupe with navigation system, which comes only with a manual six-speed transmission, but blows the Velsoter away in terms of performance. A Scion tC with the optional automatic transmission, upgraded stereo and navigation system costs $542 less than the top-of-the-line Veloster.

Neither of those competing cars have the passenger-side rear door like the Veloster does. Still, the Veloster isn’t an overwhelming bargain as are other Hyundai vehicles.

Last month, Hyundai unveiled a new version of the Veloster at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. It has a more powerful turbocharged engine and aggressive front-end styling. We like the look of the base model better, but we’d probably spring for the turbo, because we prefer snappy acceleration.

The Veloster looks like a good candidate to attract young drivers.

Hyundai Announces 2013 Genesis Coupe Price with One Big Twist

New_genesis_coupe_2

Hyundai has set pricing for the 2013 Genesis coupe in both 2.0-liter turbo and 3.8-liter V6 versions but there is one big twist for this model that you’re only going to find in one luxury model sold in the U.S.

The 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe with the four-cylinder 2.0-liter turbo engine comes equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission. That makes it the only non-luxury brand with a four-cylinder engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission. BMW just introduced a 3 series model with a four-cylinder engine and eight-speed automatic.

Getting behind the wheel of the Genesis Coupe equipped that way is going to cost $25,500. A 2012 model with a five-speed automatic transmission with Shiftronic would have set you back $23,500 in the base trim level. On the surface that is a $2000 price increase but buyers are getting a much more sophisticated transmission.

They are also getting more sophisticated engines. Both 4-cylinder and V6 engines benefit from significant technology enhancements. The 3.8-liter Lambda DOHC V6 engine adds direct-injection technology, with peak horsepower rising to 348 at 6,400 rpm, and peak torque increasing to 295 lb.-ft. on premium fuel. The 2.0-liter turbo now generates 274 horsepower and 275 lb.-ft. of torque on premium fuel.

The 3.8L GDI V6 trim level with eight-speed automatic starts at $32,000. That’s a $2250 increase from the $29,750 base price for the 2012 model.

Here is how the pricing breaks down for the 2013 Genesis Coupe lineup:

• 2.0T with 6-Speed M/T: $24,250
• 2.0T with 8-Speed A/T: $25,500
• 2.0T R-Spec with 6-Speed M/T: $26,500
• 2.0T Premium with 8-Speed A/T: $28,750
• 3.8 R-Spec with 6-Speed M/T: $28,750
• 3.8 Grand Touring with 8-Speed A/T: $32,000
• 3.8 Track with 6-Speed M/T: $33,000
• 3.8 Track with 8-Speed A/T: $34,250

Genesis Coupe Highlights:
• Refreshed, more aggressive exterior design with new front fascia, grille, headlight, fog light, hood designs, available LED daytime running lights (DRLs), new LED-enhanced taillight design, new 18- and 19-inch wheels
• New GDI 3.8-liter V6 producing 348 horsepower, 295 lb.-ft. torque (premium fuel)and 344 horsepower, 292 lb.-ft. torque (regular fuel)
• 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine receives new twin-scroll turbocharger and larger, more thermally-efficient intercooler 274 horsepower, 275 lb.-ft. torque (premium fuel)and 260 horsepower, 260 lb.-ft. torque (regular fuel)
• New, in-house-developed 8-speed automatic transmissions with paddle-shift SHIFTRONIC® capability
• New, retuned low-velocity-control suspension dampers
• Redesigned center stack appearance with premium stitching on upper instrument panel, armrest and center console cover
• Electroluminescent gauge cluster with information display
• Telescopic steering wheel (added to tilt function)
• New 7” Navigation System, HD Radio®, Blue Link® telematics available on 3.8 Grand Touring/Track and 2.0T Premium
• Driver seat power lumbar adjustment available on 3.8 Grand Touring/Track and 2.0T Premium
Is the twist of an eight-speed automatic transmission going to be enough to sell new Genesis coupes? Time will tell but it is the first step in all non-luxury cars eventually moving to an eight-speed when equipped with four-cylinder engines for better fuel economy.

We Hear: Hyundai Could Build Sportier Versions of Sonata, Elantra GT

2013-hyundai-elantra-gt-front-three-quarter-623x389

Hyundai is willing to consider the development of higher-performance versions of the i40 sedan and i30 hatchback in Europe. Those cars are sold here as the Sonata and Elantra GT, respectively, and could pave the way for hotter Hyundais to go on sale in the U.S.

According to Autocar, Hyundai Europe COO Allan Rushforth said that the company must consider performance models “if we are to expand on being a good value, reliable, and low CO2 brand.” Faster cars would help expand Hyundai’s reputation for more than just budget cars.

Rushforth told Autocar that any “Hyundai GTI” would have to involve both the i40 sedan and the smaller i30 hatchback. In addition to more power, such cars would reportedly have improved handling and braking, making them all-round performance upgrades.

Hyundai will reportedly focus its sporty efforts on expanding the reach of turbocharged engines and dual-clutch transmissions. The new Veloster Turbo already packs a 201-hp punch from a turbocharged 1.6-liter inline-four engine, and is available with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. The Sonata 2.0T sedan features a 2.0-liter turbo-four with 274 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque.

Although Rushforth didn’t confirm it, the implication is that the Veloster Turbo powertrain could be used in other sporty Hyundais. If it were used in the i30 — and by extension, the U.S.-market Elantra GT — Hyundai would have a hot hatchback that could pose a legitimate threat to the Volkswagen GTI.

“The Veloster is the first step for our dual-clutch technology,” he told Autocar. “It’s a starting point for us and we’ll look at how we can adapt it across the range.”

Spyshots: 2013 Hyundai ix45 / Santa Fe

Spyshots-2013-hyundai-ix45-santa-fe-42507-7

The new ix45 begun testing a while back now, and it’s finally getting ready to debut later this year. But the replacement for the Santa Fe is a really important car to get right, and that’s why they’re taking so long to develop it.

The vehicle you see here is undergoing winter testing in Northern Europe, as the final touches are put on the car that’s going to debut at the 2012 New York Auto Show in April. The styling will be much more dramatic than the bland crossover on the road today. Elements will be borrowed from the Veloster and the facelifted Genesis Coupe. The Grille will have three large chrome bars and the lights will elongated towards the A-pullar.

The powertrain lineup will be market-dependent and will include the usual four-cylinder and V6 units. The engine that gets us all hot and bothered is a 2.0-lite turbo with over 270 hp as seen in the Genesis Coupe. This will make it a good match for Ford’s new Kuga/Escape.

Hyundai reports record sales for January-up 15%!

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., Feb. 1, 2012 – HyundaiMotor America today announced all-time record January sales of 42,694 units, up 15 percent versus 2011.

Despite continued tight availability at Hyundai dealers across the nation, January retail sales were up 19 percent from last year due to continued strong performance throughout the Hyundai line-up, with the hot-selling Elantra up 13 percent and Genesis/Equus sales up 27 percent over last year. Fleet mix remains low at nine percent as the focus remains on optimizing dealer throughput and meeting consumer demand given ongoing production capacity constraints.

“January was a good month for us as Januarys go. We set an all-time sales record for the month, saw continued stabilization in the general economy, and witnessed the Hyundai Elantra crowned as North American Car of the Year,” said Dave Zuchowski, Hyundai Motor America’s executive vice president, national sales. “All in all, a very solid base to build off in 2012.”

Hyundai reveals details of the Hybrid lifetime battery guarantee

COSTA MESA, Calif., Jan. 31, 2012 – Hyundai today shared details of its Lifetime Hybrid Battery Replacement Guarantee, expanding the benefits of Hyundai Assurance, the industry’s most comprehensive warranty program. Initially announced at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit earlier this month, the Hybrid Battery Replacement Guarantee applies to all U.S. 2012 model year Sonata Hybrids and is the first-of-its-kind in the industry.

The Hyundai Lifetime Hybrid Battery Replacement Guarantee ensures that if the 2012 Sonata Hybrid lithium polymer battery fails, Hyundai will replace the battery and cover recycling costs for the old battery pack free of charge to the original owner. The coverage is not transferable, and does not apply to lease and commercial vehicles or vehicles serviced outside the U.S.

Hyundai’s philosophy is to make advanced technology accessible across a wide customer base, as it has done with direct-injection technology. Hyundai’s research indicates that battery replacement costs are a big barrier to the consideration of a hybrid vehicle.

“Even with all the hybrid vehicle options on the market today, there is still limited demand for these vehicles because of barriers to customer adoption such as uncertainty about the technology and performance,” said Michael O’Brien, vice president, Corporate and Product Planning. “By offering the Lifetime Battery Replacement Guarantee, Hyundai is addressing customer concerns and demonstrating our confidence in the durability of our product.”

The Hybrid Sonata, with Hyundai’s Hybrid Blue Drive technology, features a lithium polymer battery pack, making Hyundai the first automaker in the world to incorporate this remarkably efficient battery technology into production vehicles. Lithium polymer is the next generation of lithium ion technology and is ideally suited to automotive applications thanks to a robust and reliable chemistry.

The lithium polymer cells, developed with Hyundai’s partner LG Chem, use a manganese spinel chemistry that provides an excellent balance between power delivery, energy density and thermal stability. Thermal stability is critical to ensuring durability, eliminating the need to replace the battery pack during the normal lifespan of the vehicle. The electrodes in older lithium ion chemistries expand and contract with the heating and cooling that occurs during charging and discharging. This thermal expansion causes cracks in the electrodes which ultimately reduces the cell's ability to hold a charge. Manganese spinel lithium polymer cells have much lower expansion rates and are thus able to go through tens of thousands of charge cycles even without having to use a heavier, liquid cooling system.
