Your Monday Maintenance Tip: Replace Your Windshield Wipers

If your wipers are leaving visible streaks or take several passes to clear away light rain, they need to be replaced. When replacing a wiper blade, it's better to replace the whole blade, not just the rubber part.  Go to an auto parts store and they'll be able to give you the right blades for your make, model and year. If you've never replaced wiper blades before, it can be a little tricky. Just take your time, read the instructions carefully and everything should work out.

Hyundai joins college football fans in anticipation of the 2012 season, supporting 25 powerhouse programs and bringing 151 on-site events to stadiums across the country. Hyundai’s multi-pronged college football campaign connects the loyalty of Hyundai owners, highlighted by Hyundai’s top automotive ranking in the 2012 Brand Keys Customer Loyalty Index®, with the passion and traditions of college football fans across the nation. For 2012, Hyundai has added 10 schools to the program, giving even more fans the opportunity to celebrate their alma mater, while experiencing the passion that Hyundai incorporates into its entire range of products.

Headlining Hyundai’s support for college football, Hyundai is back with ESPN’s “College Football Live: Hyundai Thursday Night Kickoff” as the presenting sponsor. Hyundai’s partnership with ESPN includes 12 Thursday night programs beginning September 6 running through the end of the season. The campaign message will focus on connecting fans’ passion for their teams to consumers’ passion for Hyundai, and spots will run both pre-show and in-game. The ESPN partnership includes a presence within 25 featured games throughout the season on Thursdays and Saturdays across ESPN/ESPN2/ABC.

Hyundai has established official sponsor relationships with some of the most historic football programs in the country, with the most loyal and passionate fan bases, to bring vehicle and information displays to games this year. The 25 teams include: Alabama, Arizona, Arizona State, Arkansas, Auburn, Boston College, BYU, Cal Berkeley, Clemson, Connecticut, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon, Pittsburgh, South Carolina, Syracuse, Tennessee, Texas, UCLA, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin. From ‘The Swamp’ to ‘The Big House’ and 23 schools in between, fans from all across the country will experience the loyalty and passion that Hyundai breathes into its products, creating a union between college football tradition and Hyundai’s pursuit of excellence.

The campaign continues Hyundai’s tradition of being part of the nation’s most high-profile events and attractions including the Super Bowl and Academy Awards, tapping into cultural experiences that are unique to American consumers. By maintaining involvement with the historic football programs across the nation, Hyundai hopes to tap into the passion and traditions that make college football Saturdays such momentous occasions.

“College football fans wear their colors more proudly than any other fan base,” said Steve Shannon, vice president, Marketing, Hyundai Motor America. “Reaching fans not only through TV but also at stadiums where that passion is rooted gives us a more genuine connection to the sport and those that love it as much as we do.”

Like any loyal fans, Hyundai is not content just watching games on TV. The overall program includes 151 experiential on-site displays at some of this season’s most high-profile matchups. At select events this year, Hyundai adds to the passion of college football with the introduction of the ‘Ultimate Tailgater Vehicle’ – a 2013 Santa Fe modified to accommodate any and all pre- and post-game celebration. The all-new Santa Fe will be prominently featured in college football creative and on-site displays throughout the fall. The highly anticipated Hyundai Veloster Turbo will sit alongside the ‘Ultimate Tailgater,’ promoting an interactive, modern and entertaining brand image.

Beginning with the September 10 issue, Hyundai ads will be featured in Sports Illustrated’s “Leading Off” section. The print creative will highlight fan’s passions for their teams. Hyundai will also be the presenting sponsor of SI.com’s refreshed college football team pages and a photo contest where fans can showcase their passion for a chance to be featured in the weekly SI.com “Super Fan” gallery. Fans will be asked to visit the Hyundai “Show Your Loyalty” Facebook Tab and submit images and/or video demonstrating their deep-felt loyalty and passion for their football team, especially examples which incorporate the traditions, rituals, superstitions and culture that are most emblematic of the program and university.

Hyundai will also utilize Facebook and Twitter to enable college football fanatics to demonstrate and share their true love for their team.

Hyundai’s support for college football brings the brand directly to the fans through a multi-year agreement with IMG College, which manages the media and sponsorship rights for the schools Hyundai is partnering with, and helped develop the local campus marketing programs.

The annual Brand Keys Customer Loyalty Engagement Index ® (CLEI) was conducted by the New York-based brand and customer loyalty and engagement consultancy Brand Keys. Hyundai ranked first among automotive brands at creating customer delight in the 2012 study.

The key to summer driving is keeping the engine cool, so always be sure to to check the hoses connected to your radiator for cracks, leaks and loose connections. These hoses  help pump coolant to and from the engine block, and if they ever crack the radiator will quickly overheat, leaving you stranded.

Hys Millen sets new world record at 2012 Pikes Peak hill climb in race-prepared Hyundai Genesis Coupe

Rhys Millen claimed yet another world record and overall victory at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb on Sunday. Millen set a blazing pace to the summit in his hillclimb-prepared Hyundai Genesis Coupe racecar, needing only 9:46.164 to make international motorsports’ most challenging ascent over 14,000 feet. For 2012, Millen’s own race team, Rhys Millen Racing (RMR), made additional performance enhancements to the current world-record-setting Genesis Coupe, the very same car that set the Time Attack 2WD record last year with Rhys’ father, Rod Millen, at the wheel.

“This year, it really came together for the RMR team at Pikes,” said Millen. “With the insights gained from the last few years in our Genesis Coupe, the team was able to make some high-impact improvements, leveraging additional downforce and traction opportunities provided by the new all-tarmac surface. And behind the wheel, my experience at Pikes Peak over the years allowed me to shave a few tenths from virtually every corner. Breaking the 10-minute barrier is something I've always wanted to do, and it feels great to accomplish this goal in 2012.”

Not content to rest on their laurels from last years’ victory, the RMR team held nothing back in race preparation for this year’s effort. Special focus was given to maximizing the grip potential of the new all-tarmac course and its considerably higher average speeds. A new aero package was fitted, targeting even more downforce to accommodate higher speeds and additional grip requirements of new, ultra-wide, staggered fitment Hankook F200 racing slicks on custom HRE lightweight wheels. The front splitter was redesigned for more strength and the rear wing was redesigned for additional downforce, along with a wider rear body kit for stability. On the power side, a new Garrett GTX3582 Turbocharger was fitted, yielding an amazing 700 horsepower and 700 lb. ft. of torque from the Hyundai V6 powerplant. To handle this extra power, the brake calipers were upgraded for extra thermal capacity, and additional cooling ductwork was installed to ensure optimal brake performance at the summit’s extreme altitudes. The entire car was scrutinized for weight reduction potential and suspension settings were further optimized for Millen’s unique rally/drift driving techniques.

Rhys Millen Racing has been the team to contend with in recent years at Pikes Peak. In 2011, Rhys nearly broke the famed 10-minute barrier in his dedicated PM580 tubeframe hillclimb racer. In a classic father/son family effort, Rhys’ father, Rod Millen, set the current record in the same Genesis Coupe, having recently celebrated his 60th birthday, even beating a Porsche 911 GT2 RS. In 2009, Rhys had set the world record for Time Attack 2WD in the Genesis Coupe, the beginning of a world-record-setting dynasty for the RMR team.

Hyundau Motor America reports record July sales

Hyundai Motor America announced an all-time July sales record of 62,021 units, up four percent over last year’s all-time July record and up 9.5 percent, year-to-date.

“July was another solid month for Hyundai with surging consumer demand dampened a bit by ongoing shortages of core products like Accent, Elantra, and Sonata. Our 27 day supply of vehicles is lowest of all brands and less than half of industry average inventory levels,” said Dave Zuchowski, executive vice president of sales. “This is a challenging situation in this hyper-competitive retail environment, so we are looking forward to August with great anticipation. Relief is definitely on the way with the first shipments of our all-new Santa Fe, built in West Point, Georgia, heading to dealers now and improved availability of recently launched and red hot Veloster Turbo, Elantra GT and Elantra Coupe.”

The all-new Azera continued its strong sales pace resulting in an incredible 578 percent gain over last July. The Elantra family and Tucson saw sales gains of 22 percent and 17 percent, respectively, over the same period a year ago. Hyundai fleet sales and mix remained relatively low at 12 percent mix for the month and a 9.7 percent mix year-to-date, among the lowest in the industry.

In keeping with its industry-leading fuel efficiency status, Hyundai achieved a corporate average fuel economy level of 37.1 (EPA estimated 28 MPG window label value) in July, while selling 23,517 vehicles (38 percent of total sales) with EPA estimated 40 MPG window label highway fuel economy ratings.

“With the imminent addition of the third shift at our plant in Alabama increasing Elantra and Sonata production, and the launch of the new Santa Fe in Georgia underway right now, we’ll be better able to meet demand for our core products in the coming months,” said John Krafcik president and CEO of Hyundai Motor America.
